When I was just a little girl, my mam she said to me,
“It’s time to tell you, love, of our ancestral Banshee.
The Banshee is a family ghost that makes an awful cry,
A shriek that others cannot hear and means you’re soon to die.”

She swore she heard the Banshee’s wail earlier that day,
And, white with fear, she held me tight and then she passed away.
Da said that “she was ill & the fever was upon her,
And sickness, not some ghost, is what took your lovely mother.”

Years have passed and I have grown and moved far, far away,
But memories of ghostly tales haunt me to this day.
I know I shouldn’t be afraid, or let it get to me,
But today I swear I heard the wail of that terrible Banshee
